New Boys & Girls Club to open in Norwalk

What is it: A new Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Ohio will open July 5 in Norwalk. The site, the second in Huron County, will be at Pleasant Elementary School, 16 S. Pleasant St. The other Huron County location is in New London and opened in 2022.

Why is it important: BGCNEO gives parents a cost-free option for kids during the summer and after school. Activities include athletics, academic help, arts and music programming, leadership opportunities, field trips and breakfast and lunch each day, according to a press release from BGCNEO.

"Norwalk is a perfect location for our newest Boys & Girls Club," BGCNEO Director of Clubs Diane Crumley tells The Helm. "With limited places in Norwalk for youth to go after school, Boys & Girls Club will be a safe and fun place for youth to go each day. We love being able to be a community partner who can help serve families. We are grateful for the school district's partnership in supporting Boys & Girls Club being in Norwalk."

Who can join: The new Club will serve kids who will be entering first grade in the fall through those who will be entering sixth grade.

Hours of operation: Summer hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., according to the release. The club’s summer session will run through August 11 and will reopen as an after-school program when classes resume in the fall. During the school year, the district will bus members from three other schools to Pleasant.
