Girls Who Code begins Jan. 5 at Huron Library

The Girls Who Code Coding Club, a program from the international group Girls Who Code, will begin another session at the Huron Library, 333 Williams St., Huron, on Jan. 5.

The program “aims to close the gender gap in science and technology by teaching computer skills to girls in a supportive environment,” according to the Huron Library web site. Although the club is targeted toward female participants, boys are welcome as well. GWC welcomes people who identify as female regardless of assignment at birth. They also welcome people who identify as non-binary or gender nonconforming, according to the GWC web site.

The club, which is for students in grade 3-5, runs from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursdays from January 5 - March 9. Participants should attend all dates. A final presentation will take place during the last session.

Former Girls Who Code participants can still join in on the fun through the GWC Ambassador Program. Ambassadors help new members learn about coding and are encouraged to attend each week.

Girls Who Code, an international nonprofit organization, was founded in 2012 and “aims to support and increase the number of women in computer science,” according to the Girls Who Code site. The group’s mission is to focus on gender diversity and young women who are “historically underrepresented in computer science fields.”

Registration for both the GWC and Ambassador programs is required.
