Popular website branches out to Vermilion retail location

What is it: Mistakes on the Lake, an online logo apparel company, has been a very successful business for Jacqui Adkins, but she wanted more. Adkins expanded her virtual retailing to include a retail storefront, opening Main Street Threads at 666 Main St., Vermilion, last June.

Mistakes on the Lake features Ohio- and sports-themed merchandise online. Main Street Threads has some graphic apparel, but it has apparel from newborn to 3X in men’s, women’s and children’s fashion. Adkins likes to call her shop a “family fashion boutique.”

“I wanted somewhere where people can go and shop in person,” Adkins said during a recent phone interview. “I wanted it to be something more than my website. Mistakes on the Lake is a fun name and has gained quite a few followers. I ship all over the world, but never had a retail shop.

“I didn’t want to do a Cleveland- or Ohio-themed store. I just wanted to incorporate that into more fun items.”

Retail with a twist: Main Street Threads takes trying to be a bit different seriously. Shoppers will not find much logo gear or the nautical-themed merchandise that stores in Vermilion are so well known for. Customers will find fashion for every age, along with a mix of accessories such as jewelry, wallets toys and hats in the 1,800- square-foot location next to Brummer’s Chocolates and across the street from Swan Creek Candle.

Adkins is thinking about hosting special events for the store, including a "Mamas with Mimosas” and other sip-and-shop opportunities. The special events will likely be by invitation only, but she also has looked into offering shoppers special giveaways, grab-bags and private shopping events.

“I kind of came up with the idea because it sounded like something I would want to attend with my friends or family,” she said of the mimosa event. “We’ll have a mimosa bar with all the garnishes to make your own mimosa. We’ll have snacks and treats out, and then you’ll be able to shop.

“Sometimes having these kinds of events bring people out of the house. Since COVID, people kind of stay in and do there own things, so anything we can do to incorporate in-person shopping, it’s a bonus.”

Hours and contact info: Main Street Threads is currently open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Those hours will change to 10 a.m.-7 p.m. seven days a week in May when the summer season begins.

Contact Main Street Threads on Facebook and Instagram. Shoppers can also email the store at [email protected] or visit its website.
