Designing Sandusky: Morgan Wadding brings her style to downtown

What is it: When Morgan Wadding returned to her hometown of Sandusky, she arrived with a job in corporate America and a passion for interior design. That passion soon became a full-time opportunity and ultimately led to a space in downtown Sandusky at 124 E. Market St. to serve with her growing list of clients.

How did she get her start: When Wadding, a 2000 Perkins High graduate, and her husband and children moved from Chicago to New Albany, Ohio, they went through the process of building a new home and she worked with the builders to get that project finished. That home was sold and she led the extensive renovations on the family’s next dwelling, a process she repeated when the family moved to Sandusky six years ago.

“While I was enjoying the process, I found out that I was pretty good at it,” she said during a phone interview. “I had a corporate job (she graduated from Ohio University with a business degree in marketing before moving to Chicago) and started my own interior design and home decorating business. I was doing that part time, but then I was taking on more projects and my clientele grew, so I retired from corporate America and put my focus on MW Design Studio and Interior Styling.”

MW Interior also has developed a working relationship with contractors, builders, as well as firms such as electricians and plumbing, to make the experience as one-stop shopping as possible.

“A lot of designers will only take on specific projects,” she explains. “We take on new buildings, renovations and also do simple home decorations and styling, so if someone has that bookshelf they just don’t know how to decorate, we do that as well.”

In addition, the office location has a retail component where anyone looking for decorating ideas can come in and purchase everything from vases to candles to small furnishings and wall paper.

“We have a dual-faceted business with a retail component and the design side of it,” she said. “It’s unique and different from the big box stores and keeps it local.”

The most fun for Wadding: Every project presents its own excitement for Wadding, who adds that she enjoys watching a new building come to fruition from the ground up. But perhaps the best part of the job comes after the project has been completed and everything is staged for the client to see for the first time.

“A new build or a renovation can be very frustrating and time-consuming,” she says. “That’s when the homeowner lands on me to make the right decisions so that it not only has a timeless look to it, but it’s also authentic to what they want. I know what it’s going to look like, but until the homeowner actually gets into the space and sees everything styled and put together, that’s when they have their a-ha moment.”
