Sandusky Library Adult Service Manager Susan Spivey noticed a trend at the library resource desk.
“We frequently get legal questions at our Reference Desk,” Spivey shares. “While we are able to help people find forms or navigate technology, we do not have legal training or give legal advice in any way.”
Seeing the need in the community, a local attorney who happened to be using the library told her about the Ohio Justice Bus.
What is it: According to their
website, the Ohio Justice Bus is a mobile legal aid office and technology hotspot that allows legal aid and pro bono attorneys to travel to and provide legal service to Ohioans at no cost to the clients. Spivey knew there was a need in the community based on her interactions, so she researched further.
Discovering that the bus made stops at other public libraries, she contacted them, and the Justice Bus made its first visit to the library last September.
Why is it important: This clinic will focus on domestic relations issues, though the attorneys will consult with people on other legal issues as well, Spivey says.
“This issue is a very prevalent issue and it’s incredibly helpful for individuals who are already going through a difficult time to have free access to resources,” she says.
Oftentimes, she says, people do not know where to get started with the legal process and the Justice Bus provides an affordable opportunity to help people move forward.
“I love helping to connect people to the resources and services that make their lives easier, happier and more fulfilled,” Spivey says.
How to get involved: The bus will roll into the Sandusky Library, 114 W. Adams St., from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. April 24. Citizens will receive an hour-long consultation with an attorney that is free of charge. The bus will be in the parking lot, but appointments can be made by calling 419-625-2834 ext 6009.
The bus will return on July 24 for those who are unable to attend this visit.
